Limited Orthodontics

Limited Orthodontics

As the name implies, the focus of the tooth movement is usually minor or limited to a specific area, as opposed to comprehensive treatment which takes into account the entire masticatory system. Here for example, an adult patient had orthodontics as a child but due to not wearing the retainers for many years, the lower front teeth recrowded.

In this case, treatment is carried out utilizing a Crozat appliance. This appliance is user friendly, and most patients can eat and drink with it. The appliance is made of surgical stainless steel and gold solder so that it is biocompatible and has no allergic reactions like some metals do. Like the clear Plastic appliances it is “invisible”, but unlike the clear plastic retainers it is functional. Functional means that when the patient chews and swallows (that’s when the teeth contact and the jaws and the masticatory system function) there is no interference with the normal pattern of function. Normal function is the body’s best ally.

Limited orthodontic treatment may be indicated not only for aesthetic and cosmetic reasons, but also for pre-restorative treatment to optimize implant placement, bridges, space redistribution, and to eliminate or reduce surgical procedures and render the restorative treatment minimally invasive.
